About Ciné-Asie

Ciné-Asie is a non-profit film and media organization based in Montréal, Québec, Canada. It was founded in 1996 by distinguished visual media artist Mi-Jeong Lee. Since then, the company has been working with the Asian-Canadian artistic community in order to facilitate the exchange of artistic ideas between Canada and Asia through the mediums of film and video. Its aim is to foster and encourage cross-cultural dialogue between Canada and Asia, and to support the creation of independent works by Canadian filmmakers. All this is done in the hopes that the company’s activities will help strengthen and promote Asian and Canadian cultural heritage within the multi-cultural landscape of international cinema.

In the past, Ciné-Asie has successfully hosted and co-sponsored a number of film and video events in Montréal, including festivals, screenings, publications and conferences. It has also provided technical and organizational support to a number of individual artists, allowing them the opportunity to realize their projects.

Ciné-Asie’s staff is comprised of a culturally diverse group of volunteers and employees with backgrounds in film, journalism, music and the media arts industries both in Montréal and abroad.

For more information about the distribution and co-production component of the company, please visit the Cine-Asie Cretives website:  www.cineasiecreatives.com

History

Ciné-Asie Projects

Founded in 1996 as a registered company, Ciné-Asie started its activities in 1997 with the “Three Korean Master Filmmakers” event in Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver in collaboration with cinémathèques in Canada and the New York Cultural Center. Between 1998 and 2000 Ciné-Asie hosted monthly Asian and Asian-American film screenings and seminars in partnership with the Cinémathèque Québécoise in Montréal. During this time Ciné-Asie also organized Asian film events at the Asia Pacific Foundation and published the bilingual monthly local film newsletter “QuiFaitQuoi” on Asian film and filmmakers from Canada and abroad.

In 1999, Ciné-Asie was incorporated and co-organized “Chinese Cinema, 1933-49” together with Concordia University as part of the Film Society of Lincoln. That same year Ciné Asie organized the “Amérasia International Film and Video Festival” in Montréal and started to host monthly social events for the Asian Film and Video Art Society, a support group of Asian-Canadian artists.

After a six year break Ciné-Asie resumed its work by programming and coordinating Asian-Canadian film screenings at the Asian Heritage Festival for Acces-Asie, a non-profit organization in Montréal. In addition, Ciné-Asie intensified its collaboration with the Cinémathèque Quebecoise in Montréal by organizing a retrospective of Korean Films in 2006 and of director Hong Sang-Soo’s films in 2007. In 2008 Ciné-Asie also resumed its monthly Asian-Canadian film screenings presented at the Cinémathèque Québécoise.
