News Update for 9/29/09

xavier-dolanCBC news is reporting that Xavier Dolan’s J’ai tué ma mère has been selected as Canada’s entry for the Academy Awards. The film, which is the 20-year-old Quebecois director’s debut, has been picking up awards and plaudits at film festivals around the world. [CBC]

In other Oscar news from the CBC, its website is reporting the films picked for the Academy Awards from other countries, including Soxie Topacio’s Grandfather is Dead from the Phillipines and Chen Kaige’s Forever Enthralled from China. [CBC]

vengeance_trilogyTwitch reports that Park Chan-Wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, comprised of his films Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance is getting the deluxe DVD treatment, with a full eight-disc box set being released November 24. [Twitch]

The New York Times has an interesting article up noting the growing tendency amongst independent filmmakers in China to refuse to submit their works for government censorship, a move that is illegal in China. [nytimes.com]
